Vertebroplasty
Just as Kyphoplasty, Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive surgery for spine fractures where all or part of a spine bone collapses due to weakened bones. As seen before, vertebral compression fractures can occur because of trauma, such as a car accident or fall, tumors; but are most commonly the result of osteoporosis.
Along with Kyphoplasty, Vertebroplasty is a recommended surgical option to treat (back pain) painful spinal compression fractures that have not responded positively to conservative treatment such as rest, anti-inflammatory medication, or back bracing.
Vertebroplasty Procedure
Under sterile conditions, a vertebroplasty is performed by numbing the back and making a small puncture in the skin over the area of the fractured vertebra. Then, under x-ray or fluoroscopic guidance, one or two needles are inserted into the collapsed vertebra(s) that is filled with bone cement to stabilize it. Once the vertebra is filled, the needle is removed and s sterile bandage is applied. Once a vertebroplasty procedure is done, it usually provides immediate mobility and pain relief.
