Spinal Fusion
Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure that helps to relieve back pain in the vertebrae (spinal bones) by fusing two or more vertebrae together to reduce motion. Vertebrae pain can be associated with a variety of conditions including degenerative disk disease, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, fracture, infection, and spine tumors.
At Boca Raton Spine Center, spinal fusion is often performed along with other procedures. In some cases, a spinal fusion is done as a follow-up surgery to stabilize the spine after a different procedure to treat issues such as arthritis, spinal tumor or an infection. This procedure is often recommended to treat:
- Vertebral compression fractures
- Spine instability (abnormal motion between 2 or more vertebrae)
- Spondylolisthesis (when a vertebra slips over another one)
- Herniated disc or degenerated discs
- Abnormal spine curvature (scoliosis, kyphosis)
Lumbar Spinal Fusion Procedure
A lumbar spinal fusion is a surgical procedure where two or more vertebrae in the lower back are fused together. There are two main types of lumbar spinal fusion:
- The surgeon may take bone from a bone bank or the patient’s own pelvic bone which is used as a bridge between the vertebra to fuse. This encourages new bone growth, creating a fusion over time promoting stability between the two vertebrae causing the painful motion. It can also offer additional support or alignment in case of fractures or deformity.
- The surgeon may use metal implants to fuse the two vertebrae resulting in bone growth with the same benefits and results as with the bone graft.
Cervical Spinal Fusion Procedure
A cervical spinal fusion is used to fuse vertebrae in the neck to treat neck pain and radiating shoulder and/or arm pain due to cervical problems. The main two types of cervical spine fusion also involve the use of both a bone graft and metal implants.
Minimally Invasive Spinal Fusion
Certain Spinal fusions procedures can be performed through tiny incisions through (MIS) Minimally Invasive. This procedure allows the spine surgeon to view the affected area before and during surgery without an incision being made but through a tiny camera. This procedure reduces the chance of significant damage to muscles surrounding the spine. Which in turn, usually results in less pain after a surgical procedure and a faster recovery.
