A Cervical and Lumbar Disc Replacement procedure removes a damaged spinal disc and replaces it with an artificial disc that mimics the original one and tries to restore the motion to the spine. This type of back surgery is considered an alternative to spinal fusion, which permanently joins two vertebrae together.
Kyphoplasty, or Ballon Kyphoplasty, is a minimally invasive procedure to treat painful vertebral compression fractures by restoring the height and strength of the fractured vertebra(s).
Laminectomy (a Spinal Decompression) is a surgical procedure that removes the back wall of the spinal canal, called lamina, to create more space for the spinal cord, thus relieving pressure on the spinal cord and/or spinal nerves.
A microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive operation that involves using a surgical microscope and microsurgical techniques to access and treat the spine by removing part of a herniated disc or disc fragments to relieve pressure on the spinal nerve roots or spinal cord.
Vertebral Compression fractures are the most common type of fracture affecting the spine. A compression fracture of vertebra causes the bone to collapse in height. As a result, patients experience pain, limited mobility, height loss and spinal deformity (kyphosis).
Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure that helps to relieve pain in the vertebrae (spinal bones) by fusing two or more vertebrae together to reduce motion. This procedure is done through a bone graft or a metal implant.
Scoliosis is a condition that causes an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. A slight degree of curving is perfectly normal in most people, but scoliosis causes a pronounced curving of the spine resembling the letters “c” or “s.”
Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive surgery for spine fractures where all or part of a spine bone collapses due to weakened bones. The procedures involve inserting bone cement into the damaged vertebra.
Spine surgery was once only done as open surgery, meaning the operative area is open with a large incision in order to give the spine surgeon ample room to view the damaged area. Now, we have the latest technology called minimally invasive spine surgery (MIS.) This procedure allows the spine surgeon to view the affected area before and during surgery without a large incision being made. Instead, this is done through a tiny hole with a tiny camera. Minimally invasive surgery reduces the chance of significant damage to muscles surrounding the spine. Which in turn, usually results in less back pain after a surgical procedure and a faster recovery.
When a spine surgeon is performing a minimally invasive procedure it is done through a tiny incision. Then a tubular retractor is inserted through the skin and soft tissues down the spinal column. Now, there is a tunnel to the small area where the problem area exists. The tubular retractor holds the muscles open throughout the procedure. Anything which needs to be removed can be done through the tubular retractor and any materials which need to be inserted for surgery is also done so through this device. A tiny camera is then inserted to guide the spine surgeon through a screen.
